Clearing Out, Letting Go & Making Space!

Illustration of Anisha as a superhero rising out of a tornado in a toy-filled playroom, captioned Tornado Mode Activated

We were blessed with two public holidays in Lagos – and while most people used the time to rest, I…opened a bookshelf. That was the beginning of the end. One minute I was rearranging Ziya’s books, the next I’d gone FULL tornado mode, tearing through every cupboard and drawer like a crazy lady on a mission! My sister always says I do this – I go through phases where I ransack the house and no item is safe. 🌪️

But this time felt different.

I ended up deep in the kids’ cupboards, pulling out clothes the kids have now outgrown (which I honestly feel like I just bought a few months ago!), teether and pacifiers that once ruled our days, toys that have since been forgotten.

I don’t even recognise the Cocomelon Jay Jay Doll or the Vtech Lights & Stripes Zebra my sister-in-law got for Zayn, they have been “loved” so much. I swear at one point the whole house used to know the Zebra’s sounds! And suddenly I was emotional. Maybe it’s knowing we won’t have any more babies. Maybe it’s the finality of not having someone to pass these things onto. These weren’t just “things” – they were memories. Tiny shoes. Favourite bedtime books. That stuffed puppy ‘Bibi’ that Zayn was weirdly attached to!

But there was also a sense of peace – of space. It felt good to finally let go of things we no longer needed and pass them on to someone who does.

Instead of hoarding, I uploaded the best items to Klick Preloved (our sister platform to Klick, where moms can list & sell their well-loved baby gear), and the response was incredible. Knowing another family might use some barely used toys or that stack of board books made it easier to part with them.

Plus, clearing out was a great reminder of what the kids actually use. I’m guilty of frantic, emotional shopping (aren’t we all?), but seeing what truly lasts helped me shop smarter.

I’ve kept the most sentimental bits – Zayn’s first shoes, a few favourite outfits – but the rest? Out the door, into new hands, ready for new memories.

So here’s to letting go, making space, and maybe only shopping for what we really need (wish me luck on that last one).
