Stop Lying to Me

I’m starting to wonder if we’ve been sold a lie.

We’re constantly told we can have it all.

A successful career. A happy marriage. Present parenting. Meaningful friendships. A home that runs beautifully. Nutritious meals on the table. Time for our families. A healthy body. Track my protein intake. Keep my cortisol low. Look after my mental wellbeing and somehow get eight hours of quality sleep.

But here’s the thing: no one has managed to add extra hours to the day. It is the same 24 hours we always have had.

And every time I feel like I’m falling short, I hear the same advice:

You just need better boundaries.

And maybe that’s the problem.

Maybe we’ve taken the idea of having it all and turned it into doing it all.

Because the truth is, every moment involves a choice.

If I’m at the office, I’m not at home.

If I’m doing the school run, I’m not in that meeting.

If I’m doing the food shop, I’m not playing with my children.

There is always a trade-off.

Maybe the question was never:

“How do I fit everything in?”

Maybe it’s:

“What can wait?”

Because not every ball we’re juggling is made of glass. Some are rubber. Some balls can bounce and wait until tomorrow.

Perhaps the real skill is learning to recognise which things are important today — and giving ourselves permission to put the rest down.

So today, I’m not asking myself how to do it all.

I’m asking:

Which ball can I put down today — and pick back up tomorrow?

And maybe, ironically, that’s how we finally make a little more room to breathe.
